Treatment of osteoarthritis ‒ safety also matters: Using the pleiotropic properties of ASU

Summary: Osteoarthritis (OA) is one of the most common causes of chronic pain and disability worldwide. According to the current state of knowledge, it is an inflammatory disease of the entire joint and may affect other systems and organs. In addition to the treatment effectiveness of OA, safety plays a particularly important role. This aspect of treatment becomes even more important in the case of elderly people and in patients with comorbidities. Improvement of the therapeutic safety of OA can be achieved by implementation of non-pharmacological methods and adding symptomatic slow-acting drugs for osteoarthritis (SYSADOA). Among SYSADOA, a special place is taken by avocado soybean unsaponifiables (ASU), which have a chondroprotective effect and may have additional health-promoting properties (the potential pleiotropic effect of avocado extract).
