Extraesophageal manifestations of gastroesophageal reflux disease – Dexilant as a new therapeutic option.
Summary:
Gastroesophageal reflux disease, being one of the most common diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, is also responsible for extraesophageal manifestations. According to a new clinical classification from 2006, GERD can be divided into esophageal syndromes, which include symptomatic disease, esophagitis, strictures, Barrett’s esophagus and adenocarcinoma, and extraesophageal syndromes, which may have proven or proposed linkage to gastroesophageal reflux. Among various masks of gastroesophageal reflux, laryngeal and pulmonary symptoms are the most common. There is strong evidence of a correlation between reflux and chronic cough, asthma, and laryngitis, however GERD can also lead to dental, neurological and cardiologic changes.
