Epidemiology of risk factors of various liver diseases in Polish conditions on the basis of an online survey

Summary: Background: Liver diseases are one of the main health problems of the contemporary world. With the advent of new therapies for viral hepatitis, the focus of research should be altered to nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and alcoholic liver disease. Recognition of the risk factors for liver diseases and their prevalence is the key in this process. Methods: The study was a cross-sectional web-based survey initiated and sponsored by Sanofi Aventis Company that included anonymized answers to 15 questions about different risk factors for several liver diseases within a specially developed questionnaire. Results: A total of 57,505 questionnaires were analyzed. After the application of criteria that excluded impossible or contradictory answers, 49,694 questionnaires were included in a statistical analysis of risk factor prevalence. Most people were aged 18–40 years and 62% were women. 57% were either overweight or obese. In 55% the weight increased in the last 5 years, in 10% over 10 kg. Nearly 4% had type 2 diabetes, 27% had hypercholesterolemia, 22% had hypertension and the prevalence of these diseases increased with age. 5.2% of women had polycystic ovarian syndrome and 11.4% took oral contraception. 21% of people admitted to more than 3 hours of physical activity per week, significantly more often men than women. The safe limit of alcohol intake was exceeded by 20% of women and 46% of men. Conclusions: In this survey over half the respondents had risk factors for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease such as overweight or obesity, sedentary behavior. Almost half of men and 1 in 5 women exceeded the limit of safe alcohol intake, which may lead to the development of alcohol liver disease. The study also provides important information on other risk factor prevalence in the studied population.
