Treatment with procognitive and antipsychotic agents in patients with dementia
Summary:
An estimated number of 46.8 million people suffer from dif-ferent forms of dementia, and this is predicted to increase to 74.7 million in 2030. Dementia is not a physiological part of the process of aging and requires proper treatment. In Alzheimerʼs disease, Lewy body dementia and dementia in Parkinsonʼs disease, it is possible to use procognitive drugs whose effects include improved cognition, functional improvement, a decrease in behavioral and psychological symptoms (BPSD). Among procognitive medications, donepezil stands out as an agent which is effective, well-tolerated, easy to use and has a wide range of indications. In cases of severe BPSD, when other, both nonpharmacological and pharmacological forms of treatment are ineffective (including trazodone and tiapride), antipsychotic medications might be used. Among them, quetiapine seems to be the safest therapeutic option.
