Use of probiotics in gastrointestinal disorders according to current guidelines
Summary:
The gut microbiome plays an important role in gastrointestinal health and disease, and probiotics represent a promising modality for therapeutic intervention. The American Gastroenterological Association published new recommendations for probiotics use in gastrointestinal disorders in 2020. Current evidence suggests that the use of certain probiotic strains or probiotic strain combinations may prevent C. difficile infections in adults and children, be effective in the treatment of pouchitis and may prevent the development of NEC among preterm infants less than 37 weeksʼ gestational age.
