Summary: Atopic dermatitis is a common skin disorder of infancy. Despite its name, the influence of atopy and food allergy seems to be marginal. In this review we concentrate on a concise overview of the current guidelines and practical approach to treatment. In general, skin moisturizers and anti-inflammatory treatment allow for fast and effective remission. Anti-inflammatory treatment should rely on tacrolimus ointment or local glucocorticoid application. We underline the safety and efficacy of calcineurin inhibitors in atopic eczema treatment. Biologicals were recently introduced to the treatment in the most severely affected patients.
