Parkinsonʼs disease in old age. Motor and non-motor symptoms

Summary: Parkinsonʼs disease is the most common neurodegenera-tive disease after Alzheimerʼs disease. The number of cases has been increasing exponentially in recent years especially among the elderly. The view of Parkinsonʼs disease as a symptomatically homogenous disease entity has changed dramatically in recent years. Parkinsonʼs disease is now considered to be a heterogeneous syndrome of both motor and non-motor symptoms that occur in different constellations and with different frequency in patients. The gold standard treatment for Parkinsonʼs disease remains levodopa, which is the mainstay of treatment, particularly in the elderly where good control of motor symptoms is the primary goal of therapy, reducing the risk of disability-related complications and generally improving quality of life. Non-motor symptoms of the disease in the elderly are particularly troublesome and difficult to treat, often impairing quality of life more than motor symptoms.
