Anorexia of aging in clinical practice

Summary: Appetite is the result of cognitive processes triggering the desire to eat a specific product or meal. The reduction of appetite in older adults and subsequent reduction of food intake has been called anorexia of aging. 25‒30% of older adults are affected by appetite disorders, which is often mistakenly perceived as an element of the aging process. The reduction of appetite in old age is caused by physiological factors, such as changes in body composition and level of physical activity, as well as pathological factors related to comorbidities and associated pharmacotherapy. Official criteria for diagnosing the described problem have not been adopted, and there are no recommendations for the treatment of patients with decreased appetite. In this article, the authors aimed to present factors that, based on current research, are considered to be the cause of the development of anorexia of aging, as well as possible therapeutic interventions in patients with decreased appetites.
