Pediatric inflammatory multisystem syndrome
Summary:
PIMS (pediatric inflammatory multisystem syndrome) or MIS-C (multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children), i.e. children's multi-system inflammatory syndrome, is a new disease that began to appear in the world in April 2020. It is currently associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection. PIMS is rare and has a severe course. To date, several hundred cases have been reported worldwide. Most of them required treatment in intensive care units (ICUs). The new inflammatory syndrome is similar to Kawasaki disease, toxic shock syndrome or macrophage activation syndrome (MAS). Initially, the dominant symptom is a prolonged fever. Most patients also have gastrointestinal symptoms, rash, mucosal changes and conjunctivitis. As the disease progresses, myocarditis, circulatory failure and other organ insufficiencies often develop. Treatment is primarily supportive. Immunoglobulins and glucocorticosteroids are also used.
