Cardiovascular disease in the course of COVID-19
Summary:
Infection with the SARS-CoV-2 virus causes the COVID-19 coronavirus disease. Although this is an infectious disease involving mainly the lungs, many other organs are also affected, one of which is the cardiovascular system. On the one hand, preexisting cardiovascular disease has been linked to higher morbidity and mortality in settings of COVID-19 pandemics. On the other hand, current reports show that the virus can also damage the heart muscle and cause systemic complications, including myocardial damage, myocarditis and coagulation alterations. The present review briefly summarizes current findings between COVID-19 and cardiovascular pathologies.
