Impact of COPD comorbidity on cardiovascular disease

Summary: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is an inflammatory systemic disease. Systemic inflammation is the cause of lung abnormalities and also comorbidities. More than 50% of COPD patients have more than one comorbidity. Cardiovascular diseases are the most frequent COPD comorbidities. Tobacco smoking and passive smoking are a common risk factor for both COPD and cardiovascular diseases. Comorbidities of COPD and cardiovascular diseases increase the number of hospitalizations and deaths. It is important to remember that drugs used in COPD and cardiovascular treatment may influence the course of both diseases, but there are no special guidelines for management of COPD coexisting with cardiovascular diseases.
