Eczema as a diagnostic and therapeutic problem in the family physicianʼs practice
Summary:
The primary care physician very often encounters the problem of skin lesions referred to as eczema. This is a group of diseases with similar clinical symptoms, but with a diverse pathogenesis. Common symptoms of eczema include erythematous-exfoliating lesions and dry skin. There are seven main forms of eczema: irritant dermatitis, allergic contact dermatitis, nummular dermatitis, dyshidrotic dermatitis, stasis dermatitis, atopic dermatitis and seborrheic dermatitis. The basis of therapeutic success in this group of diseases is a precise diagnosis and elimination of the provoking factor. Due to the chronic nature of the changes, the therapy should be selected individually in each case, taking into account a high safety profile. The basis of local treatment in each type of eczema are emollients, topical glucocorticosteroids and calcineurin inhibitors. Proper skin hydration increases the effectiveness of all topical medications used in the period of the active phase of this disease.
