Quetiapine in the treatment of young adults: Case studies

Summary: The article focuses on ways of thinking about psychiatric pharmacology in the context of the use of quetiapine in young adults with depressive and anxiety symptoms. Basing the choice of pharmacological treatment on the associations that come to mind automatically in relation to a given therapeutic substance may lead to the loss of the possibility of using that drug in the full range of medical indications. For example, due to the predominant association among doctors, a drug might only be used in a specific clinical situation or in people of a given age, although the results of research and pharmacotherapy recommendations do not indicate the need for such narrowing in practice. In the approach proposed here, each drug has a specific profile of its influence on the mental functions of people who take it. If this effect proves to be clinically useful in a particular patient's situation, its use may be considered in line with the medical knowledge, but without restricting its use to a specific age group, for example. The paper presents two case studies of people aged 30‒35 years who were treated with quetiapine. It turned out that the profile of the drug's action matched the needs of these patients and enabled them to function in professional roles. As a result, not only an improvement in their well-being and functioning was achieved, but also good compliance.
