The epidemic season 2019/2020 – what’s new in the flu?
Summary:
Influenza infections are recorded every epidemic season. The numbers of registered cases and suspected cases of influenza depend not only on the pathogenicity of the influenza virus, but also on the patientís report to the doctor and the doctorís reporting to the Poviat Sanitary and Epidemiological Stations. Then, PSSS reports data to the National Institute of Public Health? National Institute of Hygiene (NIPH-NIH). Data about number of deaths in Poland are underestimated due to incorrect registration. In Poland, the percentage of vaccinated population (38 398 812 pearsons) in the epidemic season was just 4.0%, which puts Poland in the infamous, penultimate place in Europe. According to NIPH-NIH data, the percentage of vaccinated population in the range from 6 months to 4 years and from 5 years to 14 years is at an outrageously low level – 0.63%, 0.96%, respectively. In the epidemic season 2019/2020 tetravalent split vaccines, subunit vaccines, tetravalent live vaccines obtained from cold adapted influenza viruses and trivalent subunit vaccines will be available in Poland. According to WHO recommendations, vaccinations against influenza should be given to all interested persons, especially persons from high risk groups, regardless of age, small healthy children from 6 months of age, pregnant women, health care workers, etc. On the website of the National Influenza Centre in NIPH-NIH are presented the results of more than 26 studies of humoral response after vaccination against influenza of people from high-risk groups, e.g. patients with various types of cancer, people after transplantation, with cardiac problems, etc. I am convinced that the presentation specific examples will be helpful in promoting prevention and encouraging healthcare professionals to protect not only patients but also their relatives.
