Pharmacotherapy of fever – which NSAID to use and why naproxen
Summary:
Fever is a thermoregulation disorder manifested by an increase in body temperature above 38° C. Fever is one of the body’s most common responses to viral, bacterial and fungal infections, as well as to the presence of allergens and other fever-forming (pyrogenic) bodies. In the pharmacological treatment of fever, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), paracetamol and metamizole are most often used. With NSAIDs, ibuprofen and naproxen are most commonly used in practice mainly because of the pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic profile. Naproxen has an optimal pharmacokinetic profile so that it can be administered as an effective and safe treatment for fever.
