Treatment of chronic pain in palliative care

Summary: The right to a pain-free life is a fundamental human right. Two-thirds of patients with advanced cancer have pain, and one-third of those patients remain untreated. Family doctors are a vital element of the health care system that can improve pain treatment. Proper pain diagnosis is necessary, most often using one-dimensional scales: verbal or numerical (NRS). The mainstay of pain management is opioid analgesics. The choice of medication depends on the intensity of the pain, the specific clinical situation, and the patientʼs preferences. Effective pain therapy contributes to the improvement of patientsʼ quality of life.
