Modern pharmacotherapy for functional bowel disorders
Summary:
Irritable bowel syndrome, functional constipation, functional diarrhoea and opioid induced constipation (OIC) are the most frequent functional bowel disorders. According to IV Rome Criteria, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) can be divided into subtypes presented with constipation, diarrhoea or mixed. The frequency of IBS in general population was estimated on 14% based on studies of large cohorts. Several new drugs modifying bowel function were registered by European Medicines Agency and American Food and Drug Administration recently. This article presents modern pharmacotherapy of functional bowel disorders.
