Summary:
Allergic respiratory diseases, including allergic rhinitis, are the most common chronic respiratory diseases. Symptoms of allergic rhinitis may sometimes persist lifelong and can significantly affect the quality of life. The basic treatment of allergic rhinitis are second-generation antihistamines, which are safe and deprived of a sedative effect. There are many different oral and local antihistamine medications. Due to their wide and easy (over-the-counter) availability, it is important to appropriately recognize the symptoms and start treatment early. This treatment is often carried out as part of pharmaceutical care. The recommendations for pharmacists regarding the management of patients with allergic rhinitis are summarized in the ARIA 2018 statement.
