An individual approach to asthma therapy

Summary: GINA introduced a two way approach to asthma therapy, based on the tendency to exacerbate, the asthma control level. In this paper we analyze the guidelines approach based on its feasibility, efficacy and safety. We concluded, that the second way to asthma treatment (fluticasone/salmeterol) may be more safe for people with comorbidities (specifically with heart or renal diseases) and may be more accepted by patients. Although the latter may vary depending on country. Interestingly, GINA did not support the reasonableness of the choice of the first/second pathway of asthma treatment by any controlled study. We concluded, that before deciding of asthma treatment, several questions should be asked and the physician should carefully asses the patient’s comorbidities and her/his perception of asthma symptoms.
