Butyrate sodium suppositories – potential usefulness in anorectal diseases
Summary:
Butyric acid plays a unique role in the human body. First of all, it is the main energy source for the colon epithelial cells. It reduces the permeability of cells by increasing the production of proteins responsible for tight junctions, i.e. the adherence of cells to each other, and increases mucus production. Thanks to this, it has a pleiotropic effect on the intestinal mucosa, enabling its healing and regeneration and preventing damage in the course of various interventions or diseases. The following article discusses the possibilities of using the new preparation formulation in the form of suppositories with sodium butyrate in multiple disorders of the anus and rectum.
Keywords: sodium butyrate, suppositories, anorectal disorders
