Antiviral activity against SARS-CoV-2 lozenges and mouthwashes
Summary:
The COVID-19 pandemic is difficult to control, among others due to the high transmission rate of the virus and its long incubation period of 3 to 10 days. Moreover, a large group of infected patients presents no clinical symptoms. The transmission of SARS-CoV-2 by asymptomatically infected patients is a significant challenge to contain the pandemic. Due to the currently limited possibilities for causal treatment of coronavirus, preventive measures play an important role in controlling the spread of COVID-19. Since the beginning of the pandemic, numerous studies have attempted to reduce the risk of viral transmission by reducing the titer in saliva with the use of lozenges and/or mouthwashes. While povidone-iodine, cetylpyridinium chloride and essential oils may be na alternative to reduce viral load in vitro and in vivo, more clinical studies are needed to determine their real antiviral effect against SARS-CoV-2.
