Citalopram and mianserin in the treatment of depression – case reports of personalized pharmacotherapy of a depressive episode
Summary:
A depressive episode can be characterized by various combinations of symptoms. The range of symptoms may include psychomotor inhibition in same cases and anxiety, nervousness, restlessness, irritability and psychomotor agitation in others. Therefore, there is a need for individual selection of antidepressants tuned to the needs of a particular depressed person. Polish Psychiatric Association guidelines for the treatment of depression episode indicate 15 therapeutic substances as first-line options in the treatment of depression. The paper presents the concept of profiling the selection of a drug with a specific impact on mental functions to the individual profile of a patient's needs. It is a concept based on the drug-centered psychopharmacotherapy. Two cases of patients, one taking citalopram and second taking mianserin is used to exemplify this theoretical assumptions in clinical practice. Individual selection of therapeutic substances proved to be clinically effective after taking into account the effects of these drugs on the dimensions of anxiety, irritability, nervousness, restlessness and insomnia.
