Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, not only in people with obesity

Summary: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) affects a significant percentage of the population. It applies not only to obese people, but also to patients with normal BMI. The genetic factor plays an important role in these patients. Despite normal BMI, slim people are more likely to have a more severe course of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
It is important to quickly implement a diagnostic and therapeutic process, both promoting lifestyle changes (diet, physical activity) and, in specific cases, pharmacotherapy (vitamin E, ursodeoxycholic acids). NAFLD treatment requires treatment not only of the liver disease itself, but also systemic treatment of associated conditions (e.g. dyslipidemia).
Keywords: fatty liver disease, normal body mass index [BMI]
