Combined drugs in pain pharmacotherapy: benefits of combination therapy with diclofenac and omeprazole
Summary:
The use of complex drugs is becoming more and more common, also in the treatment of pain. A patient reporting pain is a frequent case in primary healthcare. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and proton pump inhibitors (PPI) are among the most often used medicines in healthcare among both prescription and OTC (over-the-counter) medicines. Through the popularization of and easy access to NSAIDs, patients who complain about pain to the doctor expect “tailor-made” therapy. The doctor should appropriately choose the drug to the nature and severity of pain and risk factors of the patient. The inclusion of a proton pump inhibitor in therapy is often advisable and even necessary in some cases. It requires the doctor to know and adjust the correct doses of both substances due to possible mutual interactions, and the patient to buy more drugs and take more tablets. An effective and efficient solution is to combine NSAIDs with PPI in one prolonged-release tablet. It reduces the risk of complications, and at the same time is a convenient method of therapy for both doctor and patient.
