Summary:
The biological versatility of iron is based on its ability to bind to proteins and act as an electron donor and acceptor. After birth, excluding exogenous therapeutic sources, all iron gets into the body from food. Ferritin is the main iron storage protein. Iron deficiency is a common clinical challenge. Symptoms of iron deficiency anemia can be very diverse and nonspecific. The approach to therapy should be individualized, consistent with the etiology and severity of the iron deficiency. Due to the lack of iron elimination pathways in the event of oversupply, iron supplementation should always be used with caution.
