Summary: Dry cough is always a problem. The mainstay of its treatment is finding the cause. Therefore, the causative treatment is the medicine of choice. Unfortunately, diagnosis and treatment of dry cough take time. Symptomatic cough treatment is needed during this period. In this review we discussed this approach focusing on codeine and dextromethorphan, which should be not used for cough treatment. Alternatively, a peripheral anti-cough medication with superior efficacy and safety should be utilized. Levodropropizine belongs to that group.
