Summary:
Pertussis (whooping cough) cases are still present, they are most common in adolescents and adults, and the most severe course is seen in newborns and young infants. Pertussis vaccination of pregnant women is the most effective method of pertussis prevention in the youngest children (who are still too young to be vaccinated against pertussis or who have postponed vaccinations and have not completed the required vaccination schedule). The cocooning strategy is complementary to, but not a substitute for, immunization of pregnant women. Vaccinations against pertussis in pregnant women are performed using a vaccine dedicated to adults, containing the acellular component of pertussis, a reduced dose of diphtheria and pertussis toxoid (Tdap). Pertussis vaccination should be carried out in the 27-36 week of pregnancy. The pertussis vaccine for pregnant women is safe for both mother and baby and is effective. Vaccination against whooping cough in pregnant women is recommended by an international body of experts, and it is also recommended in Poland.
