Practical tips on vaccination in multiple sclerosis patients
Summary:
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic demyelinating disease of the central nervous system of unclear ethiology, including genetic and environmental factors such as for example previous infections. Infections are also known to increase the risk of disease exacerbations with more severe course and more often causes defined neurological impairment. Infection’s prophylaxis decreases the risk of MS relapses and improves patients quality of life. During past 20 years number of drugs used in MS modulating therapy essentially enlarged. Mechanisms of their action may predispose to infections, including those life-threatening such as those caused by varicella-zoster virus, hepatitis virus, pneumococcus bacteria and lately severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). According to that, prophylaxis with vaccination is extremely important and is known to be safe and efficient. In the article specific recommendation on vaccination in MS patients treated with disease modulating drugs are presented with some practical tips.
