Irregular defecation rhythm in children – practical advice for parents and paediatricians
Summary:
Chronic constipation is defined as a common complication determined by difficult and/or rare passage of stool or both. This disorder can have a significant negative effect on health-related quality of life. In severely affected patients, chronic constipation has been associated with psychological distress. A range of diagnostic and therapeutic options play a key role in the treatment of chronic constipation. Non-pharmacological interventions include education, dietary modification, stabilization of gut microbiota, physical activity and toilet training program. Pharmacological treatment includes disimpaction and maintenance therapy based on laxatives. Macrogol (polyethylene glycol) is the first-choice laxative for potential long-term therapy in patients with constipation.
