Abdominal pain – what to do in everyday practice

Summary: Abdominal pain, acute as well as chronic, is not a condition by itself, but rather an expressions of multiple various diseases. Chronic abdominal pain is one of the most common symptoms experienced in gastroenterological patients. It can be caused by many organic disorders, however in a lot of cases there is not the organic disease and the diagnosis becomes to functional gastrointestinal disorder. Despite a good prognosis they considerably worsens the quality of life of affected patients. The cause is multifactorial and not fully understood. The diagnosis of this disorders should be based on the Rome IV diagnostic Criteria. Recently published new recomendations describing the diagnosis and treatment of abdominal pain, are discussed in this paper.
