Constipation in everyday clinical practice – the most common procedural mistakes

Summary: Stool constipation is currently one of the most commonly reported disorders affecting the gastrointestinal tract. This problem is growing as civilization develops. Although in most cases chronic constipation is not accompanied by severe organic disease, this dysfunction significantly reduces quality of life. Due to the multidimensional nature of the problem, diagnosis and follow-up can lead to many uncertainties and can have a real impact on treatment errors. The diagnostic process is particularly challenging – the order, number and scope of ordered tests and treatment that need to be modified along with the patient's response to the treatment. In this publication, based on recommendations of the American Gastroenterology Association, the Rome Criteria and the most recent publications the definition, pathophysiology, proposed schemas of correctly made diagnoses process and criteria for selecting an appropriate therapy for a specific case which is essential for the correct treatment of stool constipation were proposed.
