Summary: Cough suppressants are widely utilized, specifically in chronic cough treatment. Some of them are licensed for this use, some are used of the label. The oldest medications suppress the CNS cough center with some troublesome adverse events. On the other hand the newest class of cough suppressants – revealing only the peripheral activity are efficient and safe. In this review we focused on the indications for cough suppressant utilization and on levodropropizine. The latter is the peripheral cough suppressant with a long standing record of confirmed safety and efficacy.
