Itopride in the treatment of gastrointestinal motor disorders
Summary:
Prokinetic drugs, such as metoclopramide, cisapride, domperidone and itopride, are used in many countries to increase the motility of the upper gastrointestinal tract. Those drugs are being used in upper G.I. motility disturbances in functional dyspepsia (FD), gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and gastroparesis. In Poland, itopride (dopamine D2 receptor antagonist and acetylcholinesterase inhibitor) is the most widely used in the long-term treatment. Among other prokinetics, itopride is particularly well tolerated and has low risk of drug interactions. In particular, itopride does not cross the blood-brain barrier and is devoid of any abnormal effect on QT interval. Many randomized control trials (RCT) confrm the efficacy of itopride in GERD, dyspepsia, gastroparesis, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) as well as intolerance of enteral nutrition and colonoscopy preparation. The role of itopride in treatment of those diseases is well established and confirmed.
