Malnutrition risk in outpatient setting – how to change nutritional habits in the older individuals

Summary: Older adults are particularly vulnerable to malnutrition due to a high prevalence of multimorbidity, polypharmacy, decreased olfactory function, appetite alterations and food insecurity caused by economical and social factors in that population. It is of high importance to promote healthy nutritional behaviors that prevent the development of malnutrition in an outpatient setting, yet habit formation among old adults may be seen as a challenge due to changes in cognitive function in old age. Behavioral techniques described in the article may be used as a means to support the learning process for nutritional habit formation in the prevention of malnutrition among old adults.
