Eosinophilic esophagitis in children as a diagnostic and therapeutic problem

Summary: Eosinophilic esophagitis is a chronic immune mediated disease with the eosinophils predominant infiltration of the esophageal mucosa (above15 Eo per high power field) leading to the esophageus disfunction. The clinical presentation depends form the patient’s age, disease severity and dutration and may manifests as: dysphagia, food impaction, heartburn, abdominal pain, retrosternal pain, regurgitation. The diagnosis of EoE is based on endoscopic imagining with histology (a diagnostic threshold of above 15 eosinophils per high power field). The therapeutic options include proton pump inhibitors, topical GKS and elimination diets. The biological therapy remains under investigation, the univocal results are lacking. In the treatment of strictures complicating esophageal inflammation endoscopic dilatation is utilized.
