Continuous glucose monitoring systems in the management of patients with type 1 diabetes, also those with impaired hypoglycemia awareness – review of the evidence
Summary:
Continuous glucose monitoring systems (CGMS) have become a constant element in the management of patients with type 1 diabetes, and are slowly replacing the use of glucose meters. Current evidence have shown that the use of CGMS may improve metabolic control of diabetes just by making patients aware of their blood glucose levels at any time of the day or night. The patients with type 1 diabetes complicated with impaired awareness of hypoglycemia benefit particularly from the CGM use as this is the most effective of preventing mild or severe bouts of hypoglycemia. The article presents available evidence confirming the current wider and wider use of CGM in every day practice in the management of type 1 diabetes.
