Summary:
Burns are the fourth most common type of injury. They are difficult to treat and debilitating injuries to the patient's body, which are a source of suffering and pain. Burns are widely considered to be one of the most painful injuries a person can sustain, therefore, effective relief of both acute pain and persistent post-traumatic pain is one of the most important and challenging aspects of modern care of burnt patients. In addition to effective relief of acute pain caused by a burn injury, it is necessary to properly manage procedural pain associated with, for example, multiple surgical procedures for cleaning burn wounds, skin grafts, dressing changes and rehabilitation procedures. Therefore, analgesic management in this group of patients should be multidirectional and take into account the fact that the individual perception of pain varies significantly in individual patients at different stages of burn disease.
