Cough in children: Basic diagnostic and therapeutic approach
Summary:
Cough seems to be a serious problem for children, their parents and treating physicians. It is also a substantial cost and reason for frequent visits to doctors' offices. An acute form might either demand a fast track in the ED or be a symptom of a trivial respiratory infection. When sub-acute, it is often difficult to establish a proper diagnosis and treat accordingly. Chronic cough sometimes requires real detective skills. In this short review we try to outline the diagnostic and therapeutic approach. Moreover, we briefly summarize current Polish and international guidelines.
