Summary:
Allergic rhinitis (AR) is a common problem in childhood. It is an IgE-mediated reaction of nasal mucosa triggered by exposure to environmental allergens, e.g. tree and grass pollens, fungal spots, animal dander, house dust mites. AR is characterized by rhinorrhea, nasal obstructions, sneezing and itching of the nose, sometimes accompanied by eye symptoms. The diagnosis of AR is based on clinical history, physical examination, establishing a relationship between symptoms and exposure to the allergen, and additional tests such as the skin prick test and measurement of allergen-specific IgE in the patient's serum. Treatment includes education, allergen avoidance, nasal irrigation, pharmacological treatment and specific immunotherapy. Nasal steroids are the most effective pharmacotherapy for either intermittent or persistent AR.
