Child with urticaria: What next?

Summary: Urticaria in the pediatric population is a concerning symptom for parents and a frequent cause of medical consultations, although in most cases it is benign and self-limiting in character. In children it is mostly acute urticaria (lasting less than 6 weeks) that usually does not require any additional diagnostics. Nevertheless, in case of recurrence and severe symptoms, especially when accompanied by angioedema or doubtful diagnosis, a child may require consultation with a specialist (dermatologist, allergist) or even hospital admission. The paper briefly and simply outlines the main causes of urticaria as well as the proper diagnostic and therapeutic approach according to the latest clinical guidelines. It underlines the importance of differential diagnosis and includes several pictures of urticaria-like skin lesions.
Keywords: urticaria, children, differential diagnosis, treatment, antihistamine drugs
