Innovative pharmaceutical technologies and their impact on bioavailability of curcumin after oral administration
Summary:
Curcumin, also known as diferuloylmethane, is a natural polyphenol obtained from Curcuma longa. This compound has a beneficial effect upon complaints such as stomach disorders. Curcumin is a yellow, crystalline and hydrophobic compound. The poor solubility of curcumin in water and, as a result, low absorption in the intestines are obstacles which significantly limit many benefits of its use. A few strategies have been described in the literature to improve the solubility and bioavailability of curcumin. The paper discusses different approaches to the problem.
