Summary:
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is defined as a heterogeneous lung disease characterized by chronic symptoms originating in the respiratory system. In the course of this disease, so-called exacerbations can occur, which are characterized by a significant increase in symptoms over a short period of time. COPD exacerbations can be triggered by environmental factors such as air pollution, but especially by infectious agents such as viruses and bacteria. The occurrence of exacerbations has a key role in the subsequent natural course of the disease. They affect the patient's clinical condition, worsen the prognosis and increase the risk of death. To reduce the risk of exacerbations, the GOLD COPD treatment guidelines recommend a set of vaccinations for patients in a stable period of the disease. In the latest 2023 GOLD guidelines, COPD patients are recommended to be vaccinated against influenza, pneumococci, COVID-19, pertussis and herpes zoster. Implementing preventive efforts in the form of immunizations at different levels of patient care, starting from the primary care to specialized outpatient clinics and pulmonology clinics can reduce the number of life-threatening severe exacerbations of the disease and result in a better quality of life for patients.
