Nutritional treatment of hypertension – a new perspective
Summary:
Hypertension is a global epidemic and a risk factor for many adverse outcomes, including cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, and death. Greater adherence of Dietary Approach to Stop Hypertension (DASH) or plant-based diets were reported to be beneficial for blood pressure (BP). The DASH diet is considered an important advance in nutritional science. It emphasizes foods rich in protein, dietary fiber, potassium, magnesium, and calcium, such as fruits and vegetables, beans, nuts, whole grains, and low-fat dairy. It also limits foods high in saturated fat and sugar. Data also supporting the use of plant-based diets in the prevention and treatment of hypertension. More recently, clinical trial data have established plant-based diets as an effective lifestyle intervention for high BP. Features of a plant-based diet that may lower BP include lower energy content leading to weight loss, lower sodium content, increased potassium content, reduced oxidative stress, higher bioavailability of the vasodilating nitric oxide, and beneficial effects on the microbiome. This article takes into account the current and novel nutritional models for controlling hypertension useful for general physician practice.
