Flavonoids in the treatment and prevention of cardiovascular diseases
Summary:
Flavonoids are a group of antioxidants that are extensively found in foodstuffs of plant origin. Their regular consumption is associated with reduced risk of a number of chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease. It is assumed that these substances play a crucial role in reducing the inflammatory process. In addition, flavonoids have several other activities, including the ability to lower serum cholesterol and protect low-density lipoproteins (LDL) against oxidative modification, inhibit platelet aggregation, and slow down the formation of atherosclerotic lesions.
