Summary:
Injuries resulting from trauma are one of the most serious challenges for modern medicine because they are the third most common cause of death (after cardiovascular disease and cancer) and the second cause of inability to work. In Poland, around 250,000 people suffer serious injuries every year, and nearly 120,000 victims of accidents require hospital treatment. Most injuries involve the skin, subcutaneous tissue, joints, bones and other highly innervated tissues. Patients primarily develop somatic pain, although in the case of multi-organ trauma, including visceral organs, there is a visceral component of post-traumatic pain as well as neuropathic pain associated with damage to the structures of the nervous system. Therefore, the complex etiology of pain stimulation accompanying trauma requires multi-directional therapeutic management.
