Acute pancreatitis – a risk factor or the first sign of pancreatic cancer?
Summary:
Pancreatic cancer is a cancer with a high mortality rate. Its early detection is difficult. An association between acute pancreatitis (AP) and pancreatic cancer has been observed. It is still not entirely clear whether OZT is the first symptom of pancreatic cancer or a risk factor for the development of this cancer. The argument for considering AP as one of the manifestations of pancreatic cancer is the fact that pancreatic cancer is usually detected within the first 2 years after the diagnosis of AP. Consequently, AP during pancreatic cancer may have prognostic significance as it allows to diagnose the tumor at an earlier stage. On the other hand, AP, especially recurrent AP, leads to chronic pancreatitis, which is a known risk factor for pancreatic cancer. In this case, imaging of pancreatic cancer may provide diagnostic difficulties.
