Summary:
The goal of OA therapy is to reduce pain and improve joint movement, to slow down the progress of the disease and improve quality of life. Management should be multimodal and incorporate pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic methods, as well as interventional procedures if necessary (blocks, radiofrequency ablation, periarticular and intraarticular blocks) and, finally, surgery in advanced stages of the disease. Medications used as intraarticular injections include corticosteroids, local anesthetics, opioids, hyaluronic acid, botulin toxin, cytokine inhibitors, platelet-rich plasma and stem cells.
