Statins in renal transplant patients - a review of current studies
Summary:
The main causes of death among patients after KTx include cardiovascular complications. Dyslipidemia often occurs in patients after KTx and is considered an essential factor in worsening their prognosis. Statins, the gold standard of lipid-lowering treatment, play an important role in cardiovascular prevention in patients after solid organ transplantation, including the kidney. The use of statins can effectively improve the lipid profile in patients after KTx and may be connected with a better prognosis. If it is necessary to administer a statin in patients after KTx, the immunosuppressive treatment should always be taken into account and the statin should be selected in such a way that the risk of interactions is as low as possible. Patients after KTx should be classified as high or very high cardiovascular risk.
