Practical aspects of treating constipation with macrogols from the perspective of a doctor and a patient
Summary:
Constipation is one of the most common problems in everyday pediatric practice. Currently, it is estimated that this problem affects every tenth child. At least 95% of constipations are functional gastrointestinal disorders. Before making a diagnosis of functional constipation, it is necessary to exclude the so-called alarm symptoms. According to ESPGHAN guidelines, polymeric preparations of polyethylene glycol (PEG), commonly called macrogols, should be used in the treatment of functional constipation. This applies to both the first and second stages of treatment. These agents are well tolerated and safe. It is very important to be aware of the need for systematic and long-term therapy. Both from the perspective of the doctor and the patient and his caregivers.
