β-agonist and anticholinergic agents in the management of post-infective cough
Summary:
Post-infective cough is a type originating from upper respiratory tract infections that persists after the infection is resolved. 40% of adults suffer from cough following acute respiratory infections, representing 11–25% of patients with chronic cough. However, the causes of this condition are still poorly understood. The post-infection cough is believed to be caused by impaired epithelial integrity and inflammation of the upper or lower respiratory tract with or without transient hyperactivity. It was hypothesized that bronchodilators might have a role in the management of post-viral cough. This article describes the effects of cholinergic and antimuscarinic drugs, and their combination in the treatment of this post-infective ailment.
Keywords: post-infective cough, β-agonist, anticholinergic agents
